Hello YCA Fam,
And welcome to The Resource, a new weekly blog that we are bringing your way. From here on out we will be posting every Friday about competitions, events, workshops, etc. that you can partake in. Some of these competitions and events are hosted by your next-door neighbors, and some by friends across the country. Many of these opportunities while rooted in poetry, will also allow you to explore different types of writing and art forms. One Teen Story
“We’re excited to announce our newest One Teen Story Contest! Now through May 31st, 2017, we’re asking writers ages 13-19 to enter their original, unpublished fiction. We are interested in great short stories of any genre—literary, fantasy, sci-fi, love stories, and horror. What’s in a great short story? Interesting characters, a unique voice, strong writing, and a beginning, middle and end. The winning story will be published in a forthcoming issue of One Teen Story, which will reach over ten thousand readers. The contest winner will receive $500 and 25 copies of the magazine featuring their work. The contest winner will also have the opportunity to work with a One Teen Story editor prior to publication. Honorable mentions will be chosen in three age categories: 13-15, 16-17, and 18-19 year-olds, and each will be announced on our website, email announcement, and social media.”

VSA Playwright Discovery Program Competition
“Young writers with disabilities are encouraged to submit a ‘ten-minute script’ of any genre. Entries may be the work of an individual student or a collaboration by a group of up to five students. The competition has three divisions: grades 6-7, grades 8-9, and grades 10-12 (or equivalents). Winners will be featured in the press and on the Kennedy Center website. Selected winners in the Senior Division (grades 10-12 / ages 15-18) will receive exclusive access to participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Washington, D.C., and the opportunity to participate in staged readings and workshops alongside the nation’s premier collegiate playwrights as well as participate in the festival’s award ceremony.”

Education Emancipation- A Benefit Concert for Bouchet Elementary School
“Join us for a concert benefitting Bouchet Elementary, a Black and Brown, low-income, elementary school on the southside of Chicago. All proceeds contribute towards the school’s goal of a 1:1 Chromebook ratio, and implementation of afterschool programs. Education proves to be the root of the issue, when discussing systemic oppression Black and brown children face in adulthood. As a community, we can stop the cycle of inequitable funding on the south and west sides of Chicago, by cultivating our own economic stability. Performers include: Ric Wilson, Ausar Daryn, Alexus Christian, JaLon Kopano, and Special Guests!! Doors @ 6:00pm, Show @ 6:30pm. Come out for a night of emancipation through the arts!!!!!!!!!!! With the support from the Rebuild Foundation. Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank is a hybrid gallery, media archive, library and community center. Located in a long vacant bank building, the facility has been radically restored by artist Theaster Gates. The Arts Bank is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 12pm to 7pm, admission to the building and public programs is free.”

Solace Souls Open Mic and Celebration of Wisdom Speaks Birthday
“Solace Souls Sundays Open Mic is a performing arts set that specializes in the genres of poetry/spoken word, dance, singing, instrumentation, emceeing and various other forms of artistic outlets. We host our artist open mic every 3rd Sunday of the month for 4 hours. We have plenty of parking, security, a cash bar, and kitchen.
