National Poetry Month Writing Prompt 11/30

National Poetry Month Writing Prompt 11/30

Hello YCA Fam,

April is National Poetry Month, and many poets choose to write one poem each day during April to celebrate the occasion. This year, we are going to be posting a writing prompt every day during April to help you with this writing challenge. Many of these prompts were developed by the YCA Artistic team for our weekly writing workshop, Check The Method. If you write poems to these prompts, share them on social media and tag us (@youngchiauthors on Twitter & @youngchicagoauthors on Instagram).

Here is prompt number 11, which uses a poem by Kyle Dargan that remixes a song by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five:

List:

Texts you love (ie: lyrics, poems, prayers, quotes, novels)
Texts in this country we hold in common (ie: The Preamble, radio hit song lyrics, famous quotes, etc.)

Call & Response by Kyle Dargan

~ a mash-up of the Lord’s Prayer and “The Message”

“The Message” video for context

Our Father who art in heaven,
there’s broken glass everywhere.
Thy hallowed staircase pissed on
by those who care not
for thy kingdom, thy name.
Come — thy will be the smell.
Thy will be the noise
on Earth. In heaven, no
money moves. Give us
this day our rats in the front room,
our roaches in the back,
and forgive the junkie
in the alley, his baseball bat.
But trespass in this place
we try to get away from. Repossess
those who have trespassed against us.
Lead us, but do not push–
we’re so close to the edge of temptation.
Deliver us from our lost
heads–this evil trying us.
For thine kingdom is like a jungle.
Sometimes, it makes us wonder
how your power keeps.
We go under. Glory
forever? — a ha-ha ha ha.
Amen.

Prompt:
